Lainey- Old Grudges

From Lainey Feb 19 -

Old Grudges

Remember his big snub?
Turns out it had something to do with his perfect wife. You wouldn't think anyone could hold anything against her -- the ideal mother, the supportive spouse -- but this goes back years, when she was a candidate for a set-up. A very powerful man set her up with a single man who needed a girlfriend. A professional meeting turned into him knowing everything about her -- too much about her -- and a very strange gift: wildlife. She ran the f-ck away and didn't look back, offending the major Hollywood player who tried to broker the romance. He was so disappointed in her that he put out the word -- he won't work with her anymore. And eventually, when it came for her now-husband to rise to acclaim, and against his own project no less, he called in every contact he could to make sure that the husband's name wasn't included, though in the end, even he couldn't control the outcome.

Top suspects: Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, Tom Cruise

Definitely Ben Affleck/ Jennifer Garner. BA was famously snubbed for a best director nomination at last year's Oscars. JG had a "meeting" to be set up with Tom Cruise, and ran from that quickly. But who was setting them up? And not sure about the "wildlife" part.

I agree, first people I thought of was The Afflecks. It sounds like the guy black balling Ben may have worked with him on Argo?

duffgrl said...

Probably did not work with him on Argo; would have been the person And also that tight w Tom Cruise?!? who brokered the TC meeting. Who is that powerful? I read JJ Abrams but I don't think he is that powerful. Also apparently TC gave JG a tiger as a present, weird. So that is the wildlife part.
In the end Argo still won best picture and other awards so that fits this blind also- that the snub didn't matter; he still won.

Ah, I read the end wrong. Thanks!

Def Ben Affleck - Jennifer Garner.

The big honcho.... Thinking Steven Spielberg. He worked with Garner on Catch me if you Can... and his film Lincoln was up against Argo for Best Picture last year.

Spielberg worked with Tom Cruise on Minority Report.

Am I right?

I can't see Steven Spielberg wanting to get back at JG/BA because she ran from that crazy. He seems too normal. Not sure if there is a big honcho who is a scientologist. Is Sherry Lansing a scientologist?

I thought George Clooney for the powered broker set up guy. He was producer of Argo, and Lainey mentioned working against his own interest. But I can't see the set up being with Tom cruise.

The set-up was definitely, definitely with Tom Cruise. It has been written about many times. I think the big question is who the major player is who set it up. TC famously "auditioned" quite a few actresses before KH who turned him down, one being JG.

JJ Abrams likely set up the two of them as he worked w/ JG on "Alias" and w TC on MI. But I don't see him as a major power player(?). TC is tight w Ron Meyer though, and Sherry Lansing.

I second the Spielberg guess. He and Cruise did both Minority Report and War of the Worlds together and got pretty tight. I read the "against his own project" as being Argo going against Lincoln.

I agree that this is Spielberg. He has the juice to impact Director noms, but not Picture. Also, he exec produces a TON of JJ Abrams projects. And at the time of the blackballing of Garner, she was on Alias (Abrams project).

Clever wording by Lainey: "in the end..." since Best Picture is the LAST award given!

Everything above makes sense.

I'm curious though: I wonder what "knowing everything about her -- too much about her" meant? What's the dirt on Jennifer Garner?

Garner also appeared (briefly) in Catch Me If You Can.

I thought Spielberg got mad at Cruise after Cruise "distracted" the media during "War of the Worlds"' promotion -- that was when he was in full-fledged Scientology anti-psych mode, and there was talk that Spielberg felt it hurt the film's box office. If you Google "Spielberg Cruise feud," you'll see a Celebitchy story about it among the top results.

The 'wildlife' is a reference to Andrew Morton's book "Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography" in which Morton writes that sent Garner a bunch of creepy phone messages AND, get this, a bengal tiger.

Spielberg hated working with Cruise and this really isn't his style....

I thought maybe Leo had something to do with it. Him and Jen worked together on Catch Me If You Can and his movie was up against Ben's last year.

I haven't posted in quite a long time since Ted no longer writes but this one got my attention!
Agree this is Garner/Affleck. It's fascinating how Scientology works.
I think Jen got spooked by all the background checking that is done.
Anyway, this could be Sumner Redstone as the power broker.
He owned or majority owned many media companies including Paramount which released or distributed a ton of Cruise films (example: all the Mission Impossible films).
A Vanity Fair article talked about how Redstone saved Cruise's career after the Oprah thing.
Got me to wondering if he was involved in the girlfriend/wife search overall.
However I can't quite get the connection to Jen Garner in that so far I haven't been able to find where she worked on a film connected to Redstone companies.
The blind could mean that he tried to work with her to set her up with Cruise and won't work with her in any capacity ever again??
Interestingly there are some Affleck films from the early 2000's from Paramount.
As far as the films during the same year as Argo, Flight is one of Paramount's but wasn't a best director nominee that year.
So another puzzle on the "against his own project part" for the 2012/2013 awards season.

I think whoever said JJ abrams ... I agree he may be the hollywood person who tried to set them up.

I think the project may be the new Batman movie? When she said "even he couldn't control the outcome" it almost seems like more than just he wanted Affleck out of the project. Not very many people were happy with Affleck being cast in the part, and I read that it was controversial even among the people putting together the movie. Maybe one of the producers or the director for the new Batman is the one who tried to set up Garner with Cruise.
I'm also curious about the wildlife part.
Will definitely look into who is directing the new Batman movie and his relation to Garner and Cruise, and will also check into Jennifer owning any kind of strange wild pet at any time.
I've been missing the gossip so much lately. Where is Ted?!

Lainey pretty much confirmed that this is Ben Affleck/Jen Garner in today's intro by referencing last year's snub as a "clue." Clearly, the creepy would-be boyfriend was Tom Cruise based on the story in Andrew Morton's biography of him. Not sure who the power player is, but Abrams or Redstone would be the best guess. That's the least juicy part of the whole thing though, so who really cares. haha

I think the power player is Harvey Weinstein. He was executive producer for both Silver Linings and Django which both ran against Argo. It has always been alluded to that he is not someone you want to cross.

Definitely seems like Spielberg. 1) He was close with Cruise in the first half of the 00s when Cruise was looking for a new wife. 2) Since the votes for the noms comes from only the people within that field, SS has the juice to ensure BA didn't receive enough votes to make the nominee cut for Best Director. 3) due to some other public actions people think SS is doing more and more to try to control the Oscars. He wants more statues because he thinks only two doesn't separate him from the pack enough. He wants to go down as the best ever.
