Lainey- Actor vs. Director

Lainey riddle -

Actor vs. Director

An acclaimed actor. And an acclaimed director. A director with a huge ego, recently made even bigger, and his acclaimed friends are pricks too, so it’s not like there’s anyone around to check his behaviour... until he took it a step too far with someone who has some experience with knocking around douchebags on set.
So it’s been a long shoot. And this is a technically particular director. His exacting demands have made it so that production is taking a long, long time. He berates and belittles the crew, he’s impatient, and he’s often cruel, even unethical in his pursuit to get the “perfect shot”. With the hardware now, he feels even more justified in being as unkind as he wants to be, because in his mind, art is often not compatible with compassion. Compassion was the problem when one of his leads, due to a physical ailment, relied on wardrobe to come up with a solution that would alleviate some of his pain. It was a relief to the actor and, for the most part, it wasn’t a big deal aesthetically, until a long shot was required, at which point the director noticed that an adjustment had been made to help with the actor’s discomfort.
The director went ballistic. He got right up in the actor’s face. They start screaming at each other. They decide to take their argument somewhere private, where they continue to yell at each other. It’s LOUD. It’s ugly. It’s level 15 on intensity. The director won’t forgive, the actor won’t apologise. Everyone can hear. And then…
Silence.
The actor exits. On his own.
The director?
Is found by the crew moments later. On the ground in his tent. One punch.

Actor: Tom Hardy
Director: Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu.
Film: Revenent

Director just won Oscar for Birdman; Tom Hardy punched out Shia LeBouf on set previously. So I think this fits the best. At first I thought it was David O. Russell but…the clue about punching douchebags…that has to be Tom Hardy.

This reads like Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu and Tom Hardy to me. Currently filming Revenant with Leo. I would say the actor could be Leo, but Leo doesn't seem like someone who could take another man out with one punch as much as Tom Hardy does.

I'm going with David O Russell and Robert de Niro, currently working on Joy. Russell first class jerk, widely known, he likes to throw things around sets, and yell and scream for prolonged periods. Don't know about the technical side. Also, de Niro getting old, maybe needing some "support" somewhere hidden.

Oh Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu is a good guess. Isn't he friends with Sean Penn? That might be what she's alluding to with "his acclaimed friends are pricks too."

Is James Cameron a possibility? He's always been known as an egomaniac plus he's all about the technical aspects of directing.

Well...this has to be an actor who has a physical ailment. I don't think Tom Hardy is really that physically messed up. Someone like Samuel Jackson and Quentin I could see, because they're filming right now. Or Channing Tatum and Quentin...but Channing seems physically fine too.

I think it's definitely Innaritu and Tom Hardy. Lainey makes a point about mentioning the technicality of the director and that it was a particular long shot when the director freaked out. Well Birdman was filmed in long shots which was why everyone was raving about how difficult that would have been to shoot. Also, Revenant is being filmed in BC where Lainey used to live and has lots of sources, so it's likely someone would leak her this information. Lastly, the film is about the frontier and they are filming in the forest so makes sense that the director would be found in a tent. And Tom hardy punched Shia Laboeuf on the set of lawless. So it all adds up to me! I was desperately hoping this was David O'Russell and that Innaritu wasn't such a douche but it all fits too well 😔

I have to agree with @Nobody (heh): It sounds like David O Russell.

Lainey has had a few posts and a reminder not long ago about how he has treated actors in the past, a clip of his aggressively berating Lily Tomlin, and how he had yelled at Jennifer Lawrence and cockblocked Harvey Weinstein from the set of the movie "Joy".

Joy is supposed to star Robert De Niro as well, and he seemed to be not doing so well physically in all Adam Sandler (shitty) movies. Also, De Niro's temper.

Oh yeah...David O'Russell. I forgot about that with his temper. no one likes working with him, because he's a jerk. He fought with Lilly Tomlin, George Clooney...and others I'm sure. The fights were big enough where they're still discussed to this day.

I'm going with David O'Russell, Bradly Cooper or Robert DeNiro. They were filming first week of March in my town in North Reading, and I know it's had a few delays. It has to be an actor with a physical discomfort...so I'm going with DeNiro. An older, established, tough actor with a good right hook.

Plus TH was injured last summer while filming 'Legend' so it's likely that he still hasn't recovered (physical ailment). I've also heard that Innaritu shoots at a specific time of day cus he's using natural light for this one. The prick comment definitely alludes to Sean Penn.

Has to be Innaritu, one of the biggest clues here is the fact that Lainey points out that he was"...recently made even bigger" and "...with the hardware now" (obviously this implies his 3 Oscar wins) also I dont think it can be DOR just because that would be too easy and I mean..is that really gossip??? We already know DOR is a huge douchebag. And also I dont see Deniro knocking a director around, i feel like someone of his status and caliber would be past that kind of behaviour.

It's not Inarritu and Hardy. For one thing The Revenant has only been filming for about 2 months. That's not a long shoot. Also, Inarritu is not known to be a hard ass or exceedingly difficult. He's extremely well-liked and respected by his casts and crews. He's not known for throwing fits, being a jerk to his actors or any other assholish behavior. By all accounts he's easy to work with and respects his cast and crew. Him getting into a fist fight with an actor is just not going to happen. He's too professional to let it degrade to that.

HAS said...

According to imdb, the movie has been filming since October, and is supposed to be released in December. That seems like a pretty long shoot to me. How long has DiCaprio had that ratty beard?

Unknown said...

My guess is MARTIN SCORCESE and LIAM NEESON.

Scorcese is famous for being a perfectionist and insisting on long shoots. Editing in his movies are a problem because of this, so they are usually long. He got a long overdue Oscar for The Departed.

Inarritu won an Oscar a month ago. Do you really think it's enough time to make him feel entitled to treat actors in this manner??

Also, at the end, she mentions "Silence", which is the name of the movie Scorcese and Neeson are shooting together at the moment. Also, "one punch" could be a reference to Raging Bull?

As for his "prick" friends… He's worked with half of Hollywood, it could be anyone, from DiCaprio to Alec Baldwin.

As for Liam Neeson… well, he's so good at kicking ass on screen, I bet if we search a bit we'll find he did the same off screen as well!

Unknown said...

Just thought of something else…

She ALWAYS mentions Jonah Hill (who worked with Scorsese on Wolf of Wall Street) as "2x Oscar nominee, FRIEND of Leo, Marty, Brad and Angie… And Lainey clearly dislikes Jonah… Maybe he's the "prick friend"?

MD1979 said...

As previous commenters noted, it would hardly be gossip that DOR is a prick. That's well established. Iñarritu, on the other hand, doesn't have that rep outside of the industry yet.

The other clues indicate Tom Hardy (previous history of punching out Shia LaBeouf), and some people were asking if he was injured. He injured his foot / ankle last year, which could be causing ongoing discomfort and something wardrobe could help with (e.g. by giving him different shoes which would be visible in a long shot, but not up close).

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2662508/Tom-Hardy-set-new-Krays-biopic-injuring-foot-filming-dramatic-gangster-scene.html

So I think @duffgrl nailed in first:

Iñarritu (acclaimed, recently won oscar, acclaimed prick friend = Sean Penn, technically demanding, known for long shoots)

Tom Hardy (also acclaimed, experience knocking around douchebags on set, injured last year, physically fits as someone who could know out Iñarritu in one punch)

... Wasn't LaBeouf who knocked Hardy on his ass?

"So then as a follow-up, after Shia puts out the story, Hardy is then asked about it when he’s promoting Warrior. Just... let me break it down so we’re clear: Tom Hardy, while promoting WARRIOR, is asked about the time Shia LaBeouf allegedly whooped his ass. Here’s how that went down according to Den Of Geek:

"I got knocked out by Shia LaBeouf, actually," Hardy said. "In Wettest County, apparently."

"[It was] behind the scenes," he said, before being almost drowned out by incredulous laughter, both from me and my fellow hacks, and the row of publicists sitting a short distance behind us. "No, he did," Hardy continued. "He knocked me out sparko. Out cold. He's a bad, bad boy. He is. He's quite intimidating as well. He's a scary dude."

100% Hardy & Inarritu. The Revenant is running way behind. Someone on reddit with connections to a crew member posted months ago that Hardy and Inarritu despised each other. Lainey must know someone on set because this is her second blind about her freebie 5 Hardy.

duffgrl said...

So many clues that this is Hardy & Innaritu. The new hardware=Oscars for Birdman, prick friend=Sean Penn, etc….Rita: I think you have to read between the lines on that quote from Hardy regarding the punch.("almost being drowned out by incredulous laughter") And as MD1979 mentioned, Hardy injured his ankle last summer. Plus lots of evidence it is a difficult shoot i.e.:

Yeah...I re-read. I see it as Hardy and Innaritu. The shoot has been dragging on, because he's only filming in small bits. It's already been 6 months of filming and going. I think it only took 6 months to film Titanic.

Also, a-hole friend, Sean Penn without a doubt...and Hardy did punch out Shia la douche-bag.

peachesmocha03 said...

I originally thought the punch occurred on older film-21grams-Sean Penn doing the punching on Inarritu-Penn's joke about Inarritu at 2015 Oscars-"who gave this guy a green card." But on re-reading article and reading other comments-it sounds like "The Revenant"-Hardy punches Inarritu. Love Tom Hardy-especially his pics with dogs!

Lainey basically revealed this today:

"Also NB - at one point, Hardy gets an email about work the next day. Work, of course, is The Revenant. With Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu. Creative differences. Typically you side with the director over the spoiled actor. But this, this is a different perspective. The rare occasion when you might be able to sympathise with the choices an actor has to make when they stand to come out looking like the asshole."

Tom Hardy did not punch out Shia LaBeouf. Check the story.

http://www.laineygossip.com/Shia-LaBeouf-and-Tom-Hardy’s-fight-on-Lawless/24420

Even Hardy claims he got whooped by Shia.

Technical language clarification:
@ECFan wrote, “For one thing The Revenant has only been filming for about 2 months. That's not a long shoot.”

“…until a long shot was required” means a particular shot. This is not referring to the entire length of the production time shooting. This refers to a single type of shot for a scene.

A long shot is a shot that takes in a great deal of scenery, usually from a distance, includes full body shots of actors.

Someone else thought “long shot’ meant the type of one-shot takes seen in Birdman. Also not true. That is called a one-shot take.

It can't be Martin Scorsese. I have a friend who's worked on his crew for a couple of different films, and she says he's a really nice and funny man.

A new blind from Lainey (24 April), I'm sure it'll be up soon, but just to activate the brain:

"She has a new assistant who works hard, who’s very capable, who is also very attractive. After an event recently, the celebrity left with a gift bag. Inside the bag was a new fragrance. She gave the fragrance to her assistant. The assistant started wearing it as her signature scent. Over the next few days, everyone started commenting on how good she smelled. A couple weeks later, the celebrity asks her assistant to GIVE BACK the cologne. And she starts wearing it instead."

...Also, Adam Lambert revealed he's slept with many closeted H'wood stars, do we want to guess who they are?

Another hint for Inarritu and Hardy...

If Inarritu needed to be laid out on his ass—and it sure sounds like he did—some young kid is not the one who’s going to do it. That’s a job for a veteran. (Lainey: maybe one with an accent, ahem.)
